18 Weeks Until London Marathon
It’s been a while since I last wrote a blog, and if you’ve been following my journey, you might be wondering why I went quiet. The truth is, these past few months have been some of the most challenging I’ve faced—not just physically, but spiritually as well.
Since August, I’ve been recovering from high proximal hamstring tendinopathy, an overuse injury that turned my world upside down. This wasn’t just a nagging ache; it was a pain that demanded my full attention. I felt as though I had a rock lodged in my right glute, right where my hamstring attaches. Driving an hour to work each day became unbearable, as the pain radiated down my leg, through my knee, and into my calf. At times, I thought I might also have an IT band injury—it was that pervasive.
Through consultations with orthopedic specialists, physical therapists, my running coach, and a performance coach, I began to understand the scope of my injury. I initially thought it was just a tight glute muscle. Then I thought it was my sciatic nerve (I think it did affect that area too). Over time, I realized that the hamstring is a complex muscle, and when it’s injured, it affects so much more than just one area. What started as frustration and overwhelm became a season of reflection and trust.
A Spiritual Test
Early in my recovery, I found myself at a crossroads. I couldn’t run, and the pain was such a nuisance. In a quiet moment with God, I felt Him ask me, Do you trust Me enough to let this go for now? It was a moment of clarity, a test to see what held the seat of honor in my life.
I chose to surrender.
I hung up my running shoes and used this time to listen, pray, and draw closer to God. This decision wasn’t easy, but it was transformative. As I leaned into this season, I found peace, perspective, and healing—not just for my body, but for my soul.
The Healing Process
I’m overjoyed to share that this time of rest and intentional healing has paid off. With the help of my amazing care team and lots of patience, I’ve emerged from this injury better than ever.
• My running form has improved significantly. I’ve transitioned from being a heel striker to a midfoot striker, which is more efficient and reduces the risk of future injuries.
• My cadence has improved, meaning I’m taking shorter, quicker strides that are easier on my body.
• Most importantly, I’m pain-free and running strong.
London Is Calling
With just 18 weeks until the London Marathon, I’m thrilled to be back in training. In just a few short months, my family and I will be flying to London to take on my second marathon. My first marathon was Chicago in 2022, and while it was an incredible experience, this journey feels even more meaningful because of the obstacles I’ve overcome.
Training has been delightful so far, though I know there will be tough days ahead. For now, I’m embracing the miles, grateful for the ability to run again, and excited for what’s to come.
Looking Ahead
This journey is about so much more than crossing the finish line in London. It’s about faith, perseverance, and celebrating what the body and spirit can achieve when we trust the process.
If you’re facing a challenge—whether it’s an injury, a setback, or simply feeling stuck—I encourage you to take a step back and ask: What is this season teaching me?
Thank you for following along, and stay tuned for more updates as we count down to London. Next week, it’s week 17—let’s keep moving forward!
With gratitude and strides,
April
