Publix Atlanta Marathon

Bright and Early

Today, bright and early at 4:45 AM I left my house to head to Centennial Park in Atlanta.

I was scheduled to hand out water at mile marker 7 of the Publix Marathon.

Eager to give up my Sunday, and head out super early to do my part for 16,000 amazing runners.

I vividly remember the volunteers in their bright yellow vests holding water, gatorade cups at arms length and me grabbing it as I ran past this past October as I ran in my first marathon. https://storiesinstride.com/my-first-freaking-marathon/

Every time, I grabbed water I felt so grateful.

Why these people got out their warm beds to cheer me on and hand out water was a mystery.

Today I got an understanding why.

Vantage Point

As a volunteer water station attendant, you get to see it all! You get to witness the determination on runners’ faces as they strive towards the finish line. You get to see the joy and relief on their faces when they grab a cup of water and take a quick break to catch their breath. It’s exhilarating to watch them sprint by, moving effortlessly and quickly towards the finish line.

And, boy, is it exciting when the first runner comes through! It’s like watching a superhero zoom past, with all the grace and speed in the world. It’s a reminder of the incredible athleticism and dedication required to compete at this level.

But, let me tell you, cheering on the last runner is just as thrilling. You get to see someone who’s been pushing themselves to the limit. This feeling of accomplishment is contagious. You celebrate with them, providing the support they need to keep going and reach their goal. As most of the back of the packers walk through the station, you get a few more seconds to look them in their eyes and offer words of encouragement, like “you are doing amazing!” “Keep going.”

Highly Recommend

Volunteering at a road race is an awesome way to get involved in your community and support a cause you care about. It’s also a chance to experience the excitement of the race without having to run it yourself. Whether you’re handing out water, helping with set-up and clean-up, or directing runners, your contribution is super important in making the race a success.

If you’re interested in volunteering for a road race, there are many opportunities available. Check with local running clubs, community centers, or race organizers to find out how you can get involved. It’s a great way to give back to your community, support a cause you care about, and experience the joy of helping others achieve their goals.
